I2Mine Project: Demonstration day reveals great results

Successful outcomes from the EU-funded I2Mine project were presented at New Boliden, Sweden. TOMRA Sorting Mining is contributing to the concept of an invisible, zero-impact mine where the focus is on the development of technologies suitable for deep mining activities.

During November, the fourth year of the EU-funded I2Mine project was marked by a demonstration day held at the Boliden mining company, in the city of Boliden, Sweden. This event was organised to disseminate project outcomes to the general public and industry professionals. An interested group of visitors, which included academics, mining professionals and project partners, took the opportunity to learn about project results and view the testing of a prototype used to process bulk ore samples.

Working within the I2Mine project, TOMRA Sorting Mining has developed and manufactured a prototype machine described as an ´underground mineral sorter´. This facility has been designed to withstand the robust demands of underground mining conditions whilst operating at a high capacity-to-volume ratio, and has successfully proven its ability to meet those requirements.

Christopher Robben, Business Development Manager TOMRA Sorting Mining and TOMRA´s I2Mine project contact, summarizes the results: “The case study shows that, by implementing TOMRA´s sorting solution, 12% less mass needs to be moved and therefore less mass is trucked to the Boliden concentrator. This directly reduces energy consumption and carbon emissions for both grinding and transportation – a significant contribution to the I2Mine objectives and for the deep underground mine of the future.”

About I2Mine

The I2MINE project is funded by the European Commission under the Cooperation Program of the 7th Framework Program for Research and Technological Development in the ’Nanosciences, Nanotechnologies, Materials and New Production Technologies (NMP)’ theme, . FP7-NMP-2011-LARGE-1, Grant Agreement No 280855. The I2Mine (Innovative Technologies and Concepts for the Intelligent Deep Mine of the Future) project marks the start of a series of activities designed to realize the concept of an invisible, zero-impact mine. It concentrates on the development of technologies suitable for deep mining activities.
