Innovative technology for diamond recovery
TOMRA Sorting's innovative X-ray transmission (XRT) technology is installed at Karowe Diamond mine, Botswana, for diamond recovery.
During a celebration of a million carats recovered from Karowe mine on November 1, Lucara Diamond Corporation chief operations officer, Paul Day stated that the mine was at making history by becoming the first diamond mine to use XRT technology to recover diamonds.
Paul added that this diamond recovery technology can remove large quantities of gangue material, substantially increasing the run of mine (ROM) ore grade before any conventional processing takes place.
He explains furthermore that XRT can be used for pre-concentration which can effectively upgrade the mill feed prior to more conventional physical upgrading and acid leaching.
XRT is an alternative technology to Dense Media Separation (DMS). One advantage is the relatively small footprint of the XRT sorting equipment.
